3 Benefits of Having a Tutor Before High School

It’s common to have a tutor in high school and college, but what about elementary and middle school? In these earlier years of grade school, it’s less likely that many kids will be using a tutor to prepare for testing, but there are still many benefits to having a tutor in middle or elementary school.

Ready for Standardized Tests

Every state has their own version of standardized tests, and they can begin pretty early on in elementary school. In some places, passing these tests is a crucial aspect of overall performance. A few examples of tests for grades 3-8 include:

  • Florida: Florida Standards Assessments (FSA)

  • New Jersey: Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC)

  • Pennsylvania: Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA)

  • New York: New York State Assessments

  • California: Smarter Balanced

When students have the opportunity to be tutored for tests like those listed above, it can help them do better in school and increase their chances of doing well on other tests, like exit exams and even the SAT or ACT. Many schools teach in ways that tend to help students perform well on these tests; with a tutor, not only are they more prepared to take them, but they also are able to do well in the classroom.

New Ways to Learn

Tutors can help students develop new, innovative ways of thinking they may never have tried on their own. When students are introduced to new ideas and the ability to think outside the box, they can carry these things with them as they grow on their educational journey. This can be beneficial when it comes to testing, learning and life outside the classroom.
Extra Help

Asking for help can be hard, especially if it’s not something a student is used to doing. By having a tutor from a young age, an elementary or middle school student will have the chance to understand how useful help from others can be, especially when dealing with harder subjects or weak areas in academics. When help is accepted early on, it makes it easier to continue accepting it in the future. This is a valuable habit to form and can make a huge difference in a student’s academic career when they know that there is no shame in asking for help to achieve their goals.
